New Delhi: RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat has said nature has bestowed men with the qualities to hunt and perform labour, but not the skills to take care of the household while balancing work like women.

Releasing a report titled ‘Status of Women’ in the capital, Bhagwat said even though men listen to women when it comes to decision-making, they don’t take into account their suggestions, because men have forgotten what women stand for and what they have done for society and family.

“Women take care of the house, the house is run well and peacefully, taking care of all the contradictions. Women have a huge role to play in this. Men cannot do this… Nature has given man the quality to hunt, the quality to perform labour, but not the ability to take care of things,” Bhagwat said.

On the issue of women empowerment, Bhagwat said it will happen only through women, and men shouldn’t think they know better. He also said women have always taken care of themselves, something which men have forgotten.

He also stressed that men cannot decide the future of women, though women have the capability to decide for men. Bhagwat said when Swami Vivekanand was asked to deliver a message to women, he had said: “Unko sandesh dene ki aukaat purushon ki nahi hai (Men don’t have the status to deliver messages to women).”

Terming the study he was releasing as a “landmark”, Bhagwat said the change should begin from individual households, and urged men to minutely read the report.

Speaking on the occasion, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said: “Women need opportunity and access, not token participation.” She also stressed on the fact that women will also have to come out of their comfort zone and seek opportunities.

What’s in the study?

The survey was conducted by a women’s study centre, Drishti Stree Adhyayan Prabhodhan Kendra. As part of it, 26 separate studies were conducted in addition to the overall assessment of health, education and employment of women.

“This exhaustive survey will be definitely beneficial to central and state governments as well as various voluntary organisations. In addition to education, health, employment and safety, the issues covered in the survey are multi-dimensional such as women in a family to women in politics, women in slums to women in border areas. We have authentic statistics and observations on women in Bharat,” said Anjali Deshpande, secretary, Drishti.

  1. Since he has not entered Grihasta-ashram, doubt he has the experience to comment. Everything he says should not be treated as gospel truth.

    • True.He has not experienced the difficulties in middle class married life .RSS volunteers who are married are disrupting their family life by being engaged in these activities whole time and bring friction in the family .And he says RSS is a way of hindutva way of life.Too much of anything is bad.
