New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi wore a blue jacket to Parliament Wednesday made from recycled plastic bottles to reinforce the government’s message on the need to phase out single-use plastic.

The sky-blue “bandhgala” was gifted to him by the Indian Oil Corporation during the Energy Week in Bengaluru on Monday.

More than 10 crore PET bottles will be recycled to make sustainable garments for Indian Oil employees — from recycled polyester (rPET) and cotton.

Under the “Unbottled” initiative of Indian Oil, Modi launched these uniforms on Monday. He associated India’s efforts at “Green Growth” and energy transition with the “reduce, reuse and recycle” nature of our lifestyle.

The PM said at the event Monday: “These huge efforts of India towards green growth and energy transition also reflect our values. Circular economy, in a way, is a part of the lifestyle of every Indian. The mantra of ‘reduce, reuse and recycle’ has been ingrained in our values. Today, we got to see an example of this here. You have seen uniforms made by recycling plastic waste bottles. It does not lack anywhere as far as the world of fashion and beauty is concerned. The target of recycling 100 million such bottles every year will go a long way in protecting the environment.”

The Energy Week showcased India’s many efforts in making a smooth transition to green energy by reducing dependency on fossil fuel.

In this Budget, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman provided an outlay of Rs 35,000 crore for energy transition, enlisting green growth among the seven priorities of the government.
