New Delhi: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann is set to tie the knot for the second time in a private ceremony at his residence in Chandigarh Thursday. The 48-year-old chief minister is getting married to Dr Gurpreet Kaur.
Not much is known about Kaur except her being from Sangrur district in Punjab and reportedly from a common family. Sangrur is the seat from where Mann was first elected to the Parliament in 2014. He also won from the constituency in 2019.
According to ABPlive, the bride is a close acquaintance of Mann’s family, and it was his mother Harpal Kaur and sister Manpreet Kaur who wanted him to get remarried. They are the ones who chose Kaur as his match.
Mann, a former comedian and satirist-turned-politician, was first married to Inderjit Kaur but the two filed for mutual divorce in 2015. He has two children with Inderjit, a daughter, Seerat Kaur Mann, 21, and a son, Dilshan Mann, 17, who are settled in the US with their mother. The children had come from the US to attend his swearing-in ceremony as Punjab CM in March.
Mann’s ex-wife Inderjit, who hails from Barewal village in Ludhiana, had campaigned for Mann during the 2014 general elections. According to a report by The Statesman, however, Mann’s entry into the world of politics led to deteriorating relations with his former wife. The two parted ways a year after his electoral win.
After his divorce, Mann was quoted saying that he had to choose between two families and he chose Punjab.
“Jo latkeyan si chiran to o hal ho gaya, Court ch eh faisla kal ho gaya.. ek passey si parivaar, dujey passey si parivaar.. main taan yaaron Punjab de vall ho gaya…( A long pending issue has been solved. The court has decided. I had to choose between my two families. I have chosen Punjab),” an Indian Express report said.
Delhi Chief Minister and AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal has been invited as a special guest and is expected to be present at the wedding along with Mann’s family. The CM’s mother has already reached the wedding venue from their native village of Satoj.
Sources also said that Delhi Deputy CM Manish Sisodia and Rajya Sabha member Raghav Chadha are expected to attend.
Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring congratulated Mann in a tweet: “My heartiest congratulations to the CM @BhagwantMann Ji as he starts a new chapter in his life tomorrow. Best wishes for a happy and blissful married life ahead.”
