Mumbai, Jul 17 (PTI) Appointments of sub-inspectors (group-c) in the state Excise Department will be done only from within the ranks of jawans in future, Maharashtra deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Thursday informed the legislative assembly.

Any changes to the ongoing recruitment process through the Limited Departmental Competitive Examination will be made based on the opinion of the Law and Judiciary Department, he added.

A proposal to amend the service entry rules to prioritise personnel from the jawan cadre for the sub-inspector (group-C) posts is under consideration, and in future recruitment to this post will be in a 50:50 ratio through nomination and promotion, Pawar said.

Currently, 25 percent of posts are filled through direct promotion, 25 percent through Limited Departmental Competitive Examination, and 50 per cent through nomination.

Of the 25 percent posts filled through the examination, 80 percent posts are allotted to jawans and 20 percent to clerks, effectively resulting in only five percent of the total posts being filled up by clerical staff.

In future, no clerical staff will be promoted to the sub-inspector post.

Excise sub-inspectors are responsible for criminal investigation, raids, vehicle checks, and controlling illegal liquor transportation, among other tasks.

Given the physical demands of the role, physical fitness is essential, hence, the government decided that all future promotions will be from within the jawan cadre.

Legal opinion will be sought on whether the ongoing recruitment process can be halted, said Pawar, adding that if it is not possible, the current process will be completed and 100 percent of promotions will be reserved for jawans in future. PTI MR KRK
