Gurugram: Thousands of people, mainly from the Muslim community, came out on the streets Friday in Ferozepur Jhirka of Haryana’s Nuh district, demanding justice for the families of Junaid and Nasir.

The men, who belonged to Rajasthan, were allegedly abducted and killed by cow vigilantes. Their charred bodies found near Loharu in Bhiwani on 16 February. But only one arrest has been made till now, against the five named in the First Information Report (FIR) registered in Rajasthan. The Rajasthan Police had earlier this week also released a list of eight men wanted in the case. However, the name of Monu Manesar, an accused in the case, was not on the list.

Gathering after their Friday namaaz, protesters demanded immediate arrests of those involved in the killing of Junaid and Nasir, including accused Manesar, a Bajrang Dal leader and member of Haryana’s Special Cow Protection Task Force.

Journalists Meer Faizal, Sumedha Pal, and Zakir Ali Tyagi shared videos and pictures of the protest from their Twitter handles.

Meanwhile, the protesters blocked the Gurugram–Alwar highway for some time. Later, they submitted a memorandum to the President of India through the local sub divisional magistrate (SDM).

The Print sought comment from Nuh Superintendent of Police Varun Singla via calls, WhatsApp messages and SMSes, but did not get a response. The report will be updated once he responds.

What the memorandum seeks

ThePrint has a copy of the memorandum titled ‘Demand for a ban on Special Cow Protection Task Force and justice for families of Junaid and Nasir’.

It states, “The Haryana government has set up a special cow protection task force in which they have included some goons who intimidate dairy farmers in the name of cow protection and don’t even hesitate to kill people.”

“Till now, people like Pehlu Khan, Umar Khan, Rakbar Khan, Waaris Khan have been killed from Haryana to Rajasthan, and now Junaid and Nasir too have been killed by these anti-social elements in the name of cow protection. Nasir and Junaid were kidnapped from Bharatpur and burnt alive in a Bolero vehicle in Bhiwani district,” it said.

The protesters demanded that the killers be arrested immediately, and a judicial inquiry be conducted in all such killings so far in the Mewat area. They also called for the accused to be tried in a fast-track court to provide speedy justice to the affected families, financial help, felicitation and a government job each for the families of the victims.

The memorandum claimed that the vehicle that was used in the alleged kidnapping of Nasir and Junaid is registered with the Haryana panchayat department.

“The same vehicle has been used in various incidents of this nature in villages of Shekhpur, Rawa, Baghola and Rawali. A fair probe should be held in this regard and FIRs be registered,” it said.

It also demanded a probe into the role of local police in these cases.

MLA targeted

Meanwhile, Congress MLA from Ferozepur Jhirka, Mamman Khan, tweeted a memorandum, allegedly given to the local SDM by a ‘cow protection group’, demanding a sedition case against him for calling them anti-social elements in the Vidhan Sabha. In his tweet, Khan said, “some anti-social elements have killed three youths in Mewat in the name of gau raksha. I raised this issue in the Vidhan Sabha, so they are targeting me as an anti-national.”

Khan and his party colleague in the Vidhan Sabha, Mohammad Illiyas, had raised the issue of Junaid and Nasir’s killing, and also the alleged killing of Waris in January, in Vidhan Sabha during its budget session.

Waris, a 22-year-old from Mewat, died on 28 January when his vehicle crashed after it was allegedly being chased by cow vigilantes.

The family alleged that Waaris was killed by cow vigilantes, while the police said he died due to injuries sustained in the accident.
