Gwalior (MP), Jul 16 (PTI) The Madhya Pradesh High Court has imposed a fine of Rs 35 lakh on the former Vice Chancellor of Gwalior-based Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education (LNIPE) after holding him guilty of sexually harassing a yoga instructor.

The Gwalior bench of the high court, in its verdict given on July 15, also imposed a fine of Rs 5 lakh on the Madhya Pradesh government and Rs 1 lakh on the institute.

The bench of Justice Milind Ramesh Phadke directed the state government to recover the Rs 5 lakh fine from the police officer, who did not register an FIR even after receiving a complaint.

In 2019, a yoga teacher in the LNIPE complained to the Gwalior police and the Women’s Harassment Committee of the institute about the sexual harassment by the then vice chancellor Dilip Dureha, but she was not heard.

The institute’s women harassment committee found the teacher’s complaint to be true, but no action was taken against Dureha despite that, the court said.

Later, on the instructions of the Supreme Court, a case was registered against Dureha in Gwalior’s Gole Ka Mandir police station.

The high court, while referring to former VC Dureha, said the institute was under the control of a person who was not fit to be retained in service.

The judge expressed surprise that no action was taken against the accused even after the report of the internal committee was filed, while the reputation of a woman was also tarnished in this case.

The HC imposed a fine of Rs 35 lakh on Dureha, Rs 1 lakh on LNIPE and Rs 5 lakh on the state government. The judge ordered that the amount will have to be recovered and given to the victim woman within four weeks. PTI COR MAS NP
