Ahmedabad, Jul 18 (PTI) More than 53,000 prisoners lodged in different jails of Gujarat were produced in courts via video link between January and June this year, up from 40,633 in the corresponding period last year, officials said on Friday.

With close coordination between the police, jails and the judiciary, Gujarat is leading in using video conferencing to produce prisoners before the court, an official release informed.

“Between January and June 2024, 40,633 prisoners were produced before the courts through video conferencing. This number went up to 53,672 prisoners during the same period in 2025, reflecting growing usage and subsequent success of the system,” said the release.

To further strengthen the system of producing prisoners virtually from their respective jails instead of bringing them to the courtroom, the Gujarat High Court, in 2022, installed a total of 1,100 video conferencing units across the courts of the state, it said, adding that 83 video conferencing systems are operational in jails at present.

“The effective implementation of this system has resulted in savings of manpower, time, and resources for the police department. It has also allowed the redeployment of personnel earlier assigned to custody duties, thus improving overall departmental efficiency,” the release said.

This system has played a key role in accelerating the judicial process, ensuring timely justice for victims and fair punishment for criminals, it added.

Gujarat is optimising technology usage for faster and efficient judicial procedures under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and the guidance of Minister of State for Home Affairs Harsh Sanghavi, said the release. PTI PJT BNM
