Maximum cases of ‘crimes against women’ in UP, most rape cases in Rajasthan in 2021, says NCRB

Crimes against women have seen a steep rise by nearly 15 percent in the country; Rajasthan the second worst state, according to report, followed by Maharashtra.

New Delhi: Women in Uttar Pradesh faced the maximum crimes in the country in 2021, according to a National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report.

Rajasthan came second, followed by Maharashtra, the report noted. Nagaland saw the least number of crimes against women, followed by Mizoram and Goa.

Among Union Territories, Delhi (1,4277 cases) topped the list – registering a steep 41 percent hike from 2020. Out of the 19 metropolitan cities too, Delhi had the highest number of crimes against women.

Overall in the country, crimes against women saw a rise of nearly 15 percent.

A total of 31,677 rape cases were registered across India in 2021. Rajasthan (6,337) witnessed the maximum rape (Section 376 of IPC) in the country. Madhya Pradesh (2,947)  came a distant second with less than half the numbers, while Uttar Pradesh (2,845) was the third worst.

With four cases, Nagaland saw the least rapes, followed by eight in Sikkim. Lakshadweep was the only Union Territory or state that saw no incident of either rape or attempt to commit rape in 2021.

The overall conviction rate in the country stood at 28.6 percent for rape, down from 29.8 percent in 2020. The conviction rate for crimes against women was 25.2 percent in 2021.

The NCRB report also noted, “Majority of cases under crime against women under IPC were registered under ‘Cruelty by Husband or His Relatives’ (31.8%) followed by ‘Assault on Women with Intent to Outrage her Modesty’ (20.8%), ‘Kidnapping & Abduction of Women’ (17.6%) and ‘Rape’ (7.4%). The crime rate registered per lakh women population is 64.5 in 2021 in comparison with 56.5 in 2020.”
