New Delhi: Maharashtra saw the highest number of crimes in India under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) in 2021, according to National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data released by the government of India. The financial capital was closely followed by Uttar Pradesh in the number of crimes during the same period. Third worst performing state in terms of IPC crimes was Tamil Nadu.

However, Tamil Nadu has seen significant improvement over the last one year. In terms of numbers, IPC crimes in Tamil Nadu have fallen by half from 2020 to 2021. Meanwhile Delhi is the worst performing Union Territory, followed by Jammu & Kashmir.

Sikkim continues to be the best performing state with a total of 532 crimes under the Indian Penal code. The North-eastern state is followed by another of seven sisters, Nagaland and then comes Goa at number three.

Crime in Delhi city has increased between 2020 and 2021.

Out of the 19 metropolitan cities, according to the report, the national capital has the worst record in terms of IPC crimes. It accounts for 45% of all IPC crimes in these 19 metropolitan cities. While Maharashtra has the worst record, its capital city, Mumbai, follows Delhi in the number of IPC crimes in the country. Chennai follows Delhi and Mumbai in the number of cases. However, like Tamil Nadu, cases have halved in number.

From the southernmost state again, Coimbatore instead is the best performing metropolitan city in the country. Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore is followed by Kerala’s Kozhikode and Kochi cities as second and third best performing metropolitan cities respectively.

Meanwhile, chargesheeting rate in India stands at 75%. However, in Assam the rate is a massive concern. Only 4 out 10 IPC crimes see chargesheet being filed with a charge sheeting rate at mere 38.2%

Overall crime in India, after seeing a staggering rise in crime under IPC in 2020, has finally seen a decline in the number of cases.
