New Delhi: IAS officer-turned-politician Shah Faesal was detained early Wednesday at the international airport in New Delhi by security agencies and was taken back to Kashmir, sources told ThePrint.

The security agencies did not give details on why the former IAS officer, who was the 2010 topper, was detained.

The sources said Faesal, who had Tuesday tweeted that “you can either be a stooge or a separatist now”, was flying abroad.

“He will be questioned in connection with some matter once he is back. We are also looking into why he was flying out of the country,” a source said.

PTI reported that he was detained under the Public Safety Act on arrival at the Srinagar airport.

On Tuesday, Faesal wrote on Twitter, “Kashmir will need a long, sustained, non-violent political mass movement for restoration of the political rights. Abolition of Article 370 has finished the mainstream. Constitutionalists are gone. So you can either be a stooge or a separatist now. No shades of grey.”

Faesal, who is eyeing the next assembly elections, has been making headlines with his tweets on the situation in Jammu and Kashmir since the security clampdown which began on 4 August. The following day the Modi government moved to revoke Article 370 that accorded special status to the state.

The former IAS officer has been able to make statements via social media unlike former chief ministers Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti who are in preventive detention.

On Sunday, Faesal had tweeted that there would be no Eid festivities until “everything that has been stolen and snatched since 1947 is returned back”.

  1. This is ridiculous. Indian politicians are not being allowed into Kashmir because the situation is tense there at this point of time. But why is this gentleman not being allowed into a PART OF HIS OWN COUNTRY where there’s no tension – – namely Delhi? Is he not an Indian?

I don’t know who is taking these decisions. It is very evident that some people with very narrow perspective have assumed very big powers, and they just don’t know how to wield those powers. They are taking arbitrary decisions. I am afraid that includes Narendra Modi himself and his Hanuman, Amit Shah. (This is a compliment for Amit Shah, to equate him to a very lovable god). No one will believe that they have any good for the Kashmiris in their heart. The bottomline refrain in their minds is: “what do these Muslims think of themselves. I’ll show them.” In their myopic hatred for the Muslims they are unable to see that their decision will spoil peace in the valley and it WILL spoil peace in the entire country. For all his hollow oratory and pretence of being a statesman, Narendra Modi should have no doubt about this: History will remember him as a leader who brought HARM to this country’s people who put their trust in him. Only the magnitude of that harm is not defined yet

      • Terrorism from across the border was successfully bolted out, thanks to our army. Now there were only two people in the room: government of India, and people of Kashmir. By harshly and impatiently treating the other party inside the room, government of India has given a chance to Pakistan to ferociously start thumping the shut door.
