Indore: BJP MLA Akash Vijayvargiya, arrested for assaulting a municipal corporation official with a cricket bat, Thursday moved the sessions court here after the magistrate’s court denied him bail.

The sessions court reserved its order after the issue of jurisdiction came up, as there is a special fast-track court set up in Bhopal for handling cases against MPs and MLAs.

Akash’s lawyers pleaded that though a special court has been set up for trial of cases against legislators, the sessions court can very well decide on bail pleas.

The sessions court reserved its order on the issue.

Akash, son of BJP general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya, was arrested Wednesday after he was caught on TV cameras while assaulting the civic official while opposing demolition of an old house.

The judicial magistrate court Wednesday turned down his bail plea and sent him to judicial remand for 14 days.

  1. How come this BJP leader’s son is an MLA? The BJP prides itself as a party opposed to ‘dynasties’ in politics, and certainly some senior leaders such as PM Modi live by that principle. But this is a clear case of double standards. The episode does not show Vijayvargiya’s family culture in a good light at all – beating people up and so – so clearly it cannot be argued that this fellow deserves a place in politics. PM Modi must remove people like Vijayvargiya and allow the police to take action against his son. There are also other BJP leaders who have tried to promote their offspring either directly in politics (E.g. daughter of Gopinath Munde) or via advantages in business. That is a rotten culture which we hope will be actively exposed and rooted out for good by the BJP.
