New Delhi: Billionaire Jeff Bezos-owned The Washington Post’s global opinions editor Eli Lopez and BJP leader Vijay got into an online argument after the latter accused the newspaper’s editorial policy of being “highly-biased” and “agenda driven”.

Taking a jibe at Amazon CEO Bezos’ “Dynamism. Energy. Democracy. #IndianCentury” post earlier this week, Chauthaiwale had Thursday tweeted: “Please tell this to your employees in Washington DC. Otherwise your charm offensive is likely to be waste of time and money.”

— Dr Vijay Chauthaiwale (@vijai63) January 16, 2020

Responding to this, Lopez Friday tweeted saying Bezos did not dictate what the newspaper wrote.

Chauthaiwale, who is BJP’s foreign police in-charge, scoffed at Lopez’s retort and asked her to “read his tweet carefully”. The BJP leader also clarified that he had only “requested” Bezos to “tell his employees same things what he talked about India in Delhi”.

Things, however, heated up further when Chauthaiwale raised concerns about the US daily’s biased reporting and said its editors have “edited and deleted anti-Pakistan references” in their articles.

Lopez denied these allegations and said they have “published many articles critical of Pakistan”. “But some writers do not want to be edited. They expect publications to publish what they write, untouched and unchallenged. If an author does not want to go through. After our rigorous process, you are welcome to go elsewhere”, Lopez said.

The conversation didn’t end there either as the BJP leader asked Lopez to not “give sermons” and simply confirm or deny, otherwise the latter’s silence “could be construed as a confirmation”.

‘Not opposed to Amazon’

The developments coincided with Bezos’ visit to India earlier this week during which he had announced a $1 billion investment in the country even as it drew a sharp response from Union Minister Piyush Goyal who said: “It’s not as if they are doing a great favor to India.”

Speaking to Reuters earlier, Chauthaiwala, had said that the newspaper’s coverage of India had a “lot of problems” but did not give any examples.

He had also said that he was not “opposed” to Amazon as a company.

  1. Democracy is ok as long as the right party is winning or else it’s unsuitable for India. Similarly US/Amazon/Bezos are favorites as long as they are supporting our cause, fair or unfair matters not. Because we care less for the truth or justice and lot more for specific brand of nationalism and culture.

  2. If the Government cant stop the Press in US from writing poison in their papers, it can ban Amazon for funding and selling poison. Will US like Indians saying bad things about their country. Why should we tolerate it ?

  3. A billionaire does not spend a few billions and acquire a prestigeous newspaper for charitable purposes. The purpose is to influence public opinion. Washington Post staff must not take readers for fools.

  4. Sanghis are destroying country, witch hunting anyone who oppose them. Any one who does not agree with them are anti-nationals. These frauds do not have any patriotism and do not understand freedom of criticism, they only know abuse.

  5. You criticise CAA no palm oil import from Maleshya. You crticise Modi in W P no business with Bozos. How tolerant is and magnanimous is Modi

  6. Washington Post and New York Times are renowned for their anti-India editorial policy. Arguing with them is like throwing stone on cesspool. No journalist is really free from the boss’s wishes, especially the American variety. Less said about Indian journalists, the better. Gone are the days of Chalapari Rau, who went around with a resignation letter in his pocket.

  7. Jeff Bezos has to decide whether he wants to be a haughty journo sitting on a high horse and pass judgment on everybody or a businessman who wants to do busimess in the next biggest market in the world. He can’t do both.

    • How idiotic is someone to think every article is read and validated by investor.. And India is not your or BJP s fathers property to decide whom should survive here

  8. That is the problem with GOI that assumes the typical practices in USA, i.e corruption, presstititute etc in USA are typical of those found daily in India. Washington Pot released Pentagon papers. Very few In Indian press even know what it is today.

    • India haters can’t fool people just by writing opinions and citing fabricated lies and manufactured facts through round robin references invented by leftists as exposed by Arun Shourie.
