New Delhi: Jamia Millia Islamia University late Wednesday suspended a faculty member for publicly saying that he had failed 15 non-Muslim students. Soon after, however, the faculty member clarified his position saying that he was being sarcastic and that he had not failed his students in reality.

“All my students are passed except 15 non-muslims, who’ve to re-appear #CAA. If you protest #CAAProtests, I have 55 students in my favour #caasupport. Majority will teach you lesson if protest not ends #riots. Due to #corona your symbols of protest be erased. I wonder why they hate me? (Sic),” assistant professor Abrar Ahmad had tweeted Wednesday.

Following his tweet, the university immediately sprung into action and suspended Ahmad, pending inquiry. The university called it “misconduct inciting communal disharmony”.

“Dr. Abrar Ahmad, Assistant Professor of Jamia tweeted in public domain as to failing 15 non-muslim students in an exam. This is a serious misconduct inciting communal disharmony under CCS Conduct rules. The university suspends him pending inquiry,” the university said in an official statement.

‘Meant it as sarcasm’

Ahmad, who teaches at the Department of Electrical Engineering in the University, late Wednesday night sent a clarification to the Jamia Teachers Association. He claimed that his tweet was meant as sarcasm and that he has been “misunderstood”.

“It is sheer misunderstanding and misinterpretation. It was satire, parody, a co-relation to explain how minorities are being targeted by CAA and it would be as bad as a teacher saying ‘that all minority students are failed and have to reappear’,” he has written in his explanation sent to the teacher’s association, accessed by ThePrint.

He also added that he taught two M.Tech Classes and all his students have passed and that there is no question of failing non-Muslim students. “I have been teaching for 12 plus years, and you won’t find a single student complaining of discrimination,” he has added.

Tweet draws flak

Ahmad’s tweet, however, drew flak on social media.

“Fate of Non-Muslims in any Muslim majority space: ‘Jamia professor fails 15 non-Muslims students for supporting the Citizenship Amendment Act”, author and civil servant Sanjay Dixit tweeted.

“Dr. Abrar Ahmed teacher at Jamia tweeted, He passed all his students but failed 15 “Non-Muslims” for supporting CAA. We can ignore it as one off “act of stupidity” but think for a second if as a reaction to this Hindu teachers start failing “Non-Hindus”. Where are we heading to?,” wrote another Twitter user.

  1. If it is a fact, he must be prosecuted and put inside bar desturbing communal harmony. For one person we can not blame all muslim teachers

  2. Surprised that none of the commenters have read the article properly.
The teacher hasn’t actually failed his students.
He asked readers to imagine a situation where students were penalized for their political beliefs. The British also used to penalize students for supporting Non Cooperation Movement and Quit India Movement.
Sad day that a citizen of this country cannot express themselves. Sadder day when we forget our history. Saddest day when people forget how to read.

  3. Like someone stated here he is a hoodlum. Whether in a classroom or on internet you have a responsibility to think before you write or click send. This man deliberately is trying to start another anti-muslim race riot. Need to check his background and punish him for maximum extent.

  4. This rascal professor should be totally dismissed from service. He should be banned so that he may not be able to find any job anywhere. Hindu-Muslim Bhai Bhai.

  5. In Muslim world, there is no difference between a educated Muslims or unlettered one, this is what taught to Muslims everyday, once exposed they will give long lectures on secularism …
Their population exploding only in secular countries through benefit of welfare programmes, in Muslim majority countries they die from famine, hunger and violence

  6. Once exposed it is satire. Is he educated or lettered? Now we know how “educated Muslims” behave in a muslim majority. All the more reason that India does not need islamic people

    • One act of stupidity from an individual does not mean the entire community to which the individual belongs is representative of the act. India needs to get rid of ignorant racists like yourself.

  7. He shouldn’t be just suspended, along with his whole family he should be deported to Pakistaan, this is why we need CAA in the first place, to show people like these their true place. They take undue advantage of the fact that they are minority.

  8. Shocking to find such mindset from a professor. If professor behaves this way what conduct is expected from uneducated muslims, moulvis, muftis etc?

  9. Is he stupid? Trying satire while being a muslim in India in these times where the nation has already lost its brain to fake news, misinformations and hatred?? Doesn’t he know, he would always be blamed even if he means something else… Also, it was in bad taste, even if it was meant to highlight the discriminatory nature of the present government

  10. Sooner or later will be approaching another partition if such educated Muslims treat other religions,it is high time to vanish them

  11. Teachers are appointed for teaching his subjects. Politics have their own interests. Jamia Charector represent our Great Indian Charector and based on equality, secularism. Indian Society is civilised and given to the world human values and humanity in every fields including sound democratic structure and a great constitution having strong pillars from every religion dedicated to India.

    • Don’t was eloquent on what secularism means. Have the directness of calling this professor a hoodlum. People like this professor are the tumors that India has to bear under the garb of appeasement. Atleast it you don’t support it, atleast don’t beat around the bush and call this professor a donkey that he is

    • In Muslim world, there is no difference between a educated Muslims or unlettered one, this is what taught to Muslims everyday, once exposed they will give long lectures on secularism …
Their population exploding only in secular countries through benefit of welfare programmes, in Muslim majority countries they die from famine, hunger and violence

      • Yours Sick mentality. Don’t generalize things. You r frong in a well. Look at the world without a coloured glass and through an independent and impartial media.
