New Delhi: The Indian contingent bagged 19 awards at the WorldSkills competition, deemed the world’s biggest vocational skills contest, winning big in water technology, web technology, web designing, graphic design and jewellery designing.
The 48-member Indian team won a gold, a silver and two bronze medals along with 15 medallions of excellence across key skills in the competition at Kazan, Russia, which concluded Tuesday.
The event, dubbed the ‘Olympics of Skill’, saw 1,350 competitors from across the world compete in 56 vocational skill categories, such as graphic design, jewellery design, wall and floor tiling, car painting, auto-body repair, welding, cybersecurity among others.
India’s lone gold in the event was won by S. Aswatha Narayana of Odisha who emerged victorious in the water technology category by projecting a model on a waste-water treatment plant.
After India’s win, Minister for Skill Development Mahendra Nath Pandey urged people to take inspiration and hone water technology as a skill.
“India proves it is best at a skill which is needed the most in our country today. I urge our people to take inspiration & hone Water Technology as a skill & contribute to our environment,” Pandey tweeted.

The ‘Olympics of Skill’
WorldSkills is an international body that hosts events and competitions to promote vocational skills. The body hosts the WorldSkills competition every two years.
There are competitions in 56 skills across a wide range of industries, and competitors are selected from skills competitions that are held in WorldSkills member countries and regions.
“One of the legacies of WorldSkills Competitions is the increased visibility of skilled professional education, as one of the tools of social and economic transformation,” said an official in the Skill Development Ministry. “The competition also provides leaders in the industry, government and education with the opportunity to exchange information and best practices regarding industry and professional education.”
The Indian vocational skills students who participated in the event trained at different academies in their respective states, in association with specialised private bodies.
Narayana, who won gold, was trained by Rajat Kumar Samantaray, professor at C.V. Raman Institute, Bhubaneswar. Pranav Nutalapati who won a silver in Web Technologies was trained by Ruchi Pareek, technical director at Smalt & Beryl. Sanjoy Pramanik, who won bronze in jewellery design was trained by Anupam Karmakar, creative head, Vummidi Bangaru Jewellers.
