The ‘Olympics of Skill’

WorldSkills is an international body that hosts events and competitions to promote vocational skills. The body hosts the WorldSkills competition every two years.

There are competitions in 56 skills across a wide range of industries, and competitors are selected from skills competitions that are held in WorldSkills member countries and regions.

“One of the legacies of WorldSkills Competitions is the increased visibility of skilled professional education, as one of the tools of social and economic transformation,” said an official in the Skill Development Ministry. “The competition also provides leaders in the industry, government and education with the opportunity to exchange information and best practices regarding industry and professional education.”

The Indian vocational skills students who participated in the event trained at different academies in their respective states, in association with specialised private bodies.

Narayana, who won gold, was trained by Rajat Kumar Samantaray, professor at C.V. Raman Institute, Bhubaneswar. Pranav Nutalapati who won a silver in Web Technologies was trained by Ruchi Pareek, technical director at Smalt & Beryl. Sanjoy Pramanik, who won bronze in jewellery design was trained by Anupam Karmakar, creative head, Vummidi Bangaru Jewellers.
