New Delhi: The Union Ministry of External Affairs has taken up with British High Commissioner to India Dominic Asquith the matter concerning the large-scale protest that took place outside the Indian High Commission in London, against the Narendra Modi government’s move to abrogate Section 370 in Jammu and Kashmir.

“India has taken up the issue with UK at an appropriate level,” said a top official.

The official also said India has sought “adequate safety and security” measures for its high commission staff.

Thousands had gathered outside the high commission in London, where an event was being held to mark India’s Independence Day on 15 August, and shouted slogans against the Centre’s decision to revoke Article 370 that gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir and bifurcate the state into two union territories.

Some of the agitators waved Pakistani and Kashmiri flags, and carried banners saying “Kashmir is burning”, “Free Kashmir” and “Modi: Make Tea Not War”, stated a report by Reuters.

According to the report, some of the protestors were arrested while one sustained injuries.

“Part of the city was brought to a standstill as crowds of anti-Indian government demonstrators flooded the road, protesting against the country’s decision to place part of Kashmir under lockdown,” stated a report by BBC.

At UNSC meet, UK didn’t ‘fully support’ India’s Kashmir decision

While this is not the first time that protests have been carried out outside the Indian High Commission in London against decisions taken by New Delhi, the agitation this time had flared up.

During a closed-door meeting of the UN Security Council on Kashmir at its headquarters in New York last week, according to sources, the UK did not “fully support” India’s decision to scrap Article 370 and 35A in Jammu and Kashmir.

UK is one of the permanent members of the UNSC among the P-5 nations.

After the Centre’s 5 August decision to scrap Jammu and Kashmir’s special status, both British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab had expressed their concerns on the Kashmir issue.
