Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Jul 17 (PTI) The hydro power plant on the Jayakwadi dam in Maharashtra’s Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district has been shut since December 2023 for maintenance work, an official said on Thursday.
The plant, commissioned in 1976, has a capacity to generate 12 MW of electricity.
“There were vibrations in the turbine and if it is continued to be used, it can cause major damage to the machinery, so the plant has been shut temporarily,” a project official said.
Three companies have shown interest in handling maintenance work and their proposals have been sent to the Maharashtra State Power Generation Company (MAHAGENCO) last month, he added.
The plant can start electricity generation in just five minutes which is helpful when the electricity demand peaks. The per unit cost of this power is 50.56 paisa, even lower than that of solar power, and the water used to run the turbines is pumped back to the reservoir, the official pointed out. PTI AW KRK
