New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday termed the passage of a Bill in Lok Sabha seeking to make it clear that the “government” in Delhi means the “Lieutenant Governor” an “insult” to the people of the national capital.

The Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2021, was passed by Lok Sabha on Monday amidst strong opposition from the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party which said that the legislation is “unconstitutional”.

The Bill also makes it mandatory for the Delhi government to take the opinion of the L-G before any executive action.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said the Bill effectively takes away power from those who were voted by people and gives powers to run Delhi to those who were defeated.

“The passage of the GNCTD (Amendment) Bill in Lok Sabha today is an insult to the people of Delhi. The Bill effectively takes away powers from those who were voted by people and gives powers to run Delhi to those who were defeated. BJP has cheated the people,” Kejriwal tweeted.

Earlier, Kejriwal had even urged the Centre to take back the bill and said the AAP dispensation was “ready to fall at the (Narendra) Modi government’s feet” for its withdrawal.

  1. The post of CM of NCT of Delhi is just unnecessary decorative appendage and gives unnecessary boast to ego of egoist person like Kejriwal. It should be renamed as Chief of Municipal Committees in NCT of Delhi. Earlier there was post of Chief Executive counselor in Delhi who was performing similar duties . If it means demotion then consider this. Again if in NCT The Governor is named as ” Lieutenant Governor” why not CM can be named as Assistant CM for NCT . These changes are necessary and Central Govt. should bring parity in nomenclature of posts commensurate with RESIDUAL JOBS entrusted to the person charged with responsibility of maintenance of civic facilities in NTC of Delhi.

  2. The further curbs on the Delhi Government’s authority was result of all that has been going on since Kejriwal came to power. He has systematically demonstrated what havoc can be created even with the limited authority he has. Hopefully he will have learnt the lesson. Centre is not sitting in his lap it is the other way round, so a small pinch to the bottom should do the trick.

  3. By and by Modi-Shah are revealing their true colors. They have been interfering with elected governments through Governors ever since 2014, but now – – for some reason or desperation – – they are giving it legal legitimacy.

  4. Insult to people of Delhi?? They have been insulting Modi in Election after election in Delhi. The BJP got some sorry numbers in the last election right under the PM’s nose. What more can an insult be?
