New Delhi:Sardar te gaddi chadhadi (Sardar has been mowed)’ — this was the intercepted recording on the basis of which the Delhi Police’s Special Cell sought to get the voice samples of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi and his associates tested at the Central Forensic Sciences Laboratory (CFSL), ThePrint has learnt.

A prime accused in the assassination of Sidhu Moosewala, Bishnoi is suspected to have received a call inside Tihar Jail soon after gunmen shot dead the singer on 29 May in Punjab’s Mansa district.

The police had filed a plea in the MCOCA court in November for obtaining the voice samples of Bishnoi and his associates Deepak alias Tinu, Sampath Nehra and Bintu alias Mintu. On 22 November, the court gave its nod to the police’s request.

Sources in the Delhi Police that while Nehra’s and Bintu’s voice samples were collected, Bishnoi refused to do so upon reaching the CFSL lab in Lodhi Colony on Wednesday.

“Bishnoi refused to talk when he was brought to the lab. Due to this, adverse inference will be drawn in the case,” one of the sources said.

Later, the Delhi Police moved an application in the court stating that Bishnoi  refused to give his voice samples. “An application has been moved by the State informing this court that accused Lawrence Bishnoi, when produced for providing voice samples, refused to provide such voice samples. In this regard once accused in his discretion opted not to give a voice sample, legal consequences will follow. No further directions are warranted in the facts of the present case,” read the court order Thursday.

The sources told ThePrint that the phone number — 9643****** — was being used by Bishnoi to contact his associates from the Tihar jail.

This number was also being used by Indian Mujahideen operative Tehsin Akhtar who was lodged in the same jail (Jail 8 of Tihar) and the police started intercepting the calls on this number since 9 March, they said.

Earlier Akhtar’s name had cropped up when the police connected its probe into the bomb blast outside the Israel embassy and the Mukesh Ambani threat to a phone seized from his barrack after a Telegram message was sent by Jaish-ul-Hind claiming responsibility for the 29 January blast outside the embassy in New Delhi.

According to the police, Bishnoi’s associate Bintu contacted the above given number through four different phone numbers and arranged conference calls of Bishnoi with Amnol Bishnoi, Brar, Nehra and Deepak between April and May.

“Bishnoi was keeping in touch with his associates Sampat Nehra, Bintu and Deepak. He was also in touch with Goldy Brar. During interception, multiple calls were recorded but the incriminating phone in question hasn’t been located yet. Most of the conversations we suspect were among these four,” the source said.

Soon after the murder of Moosewala, the Punjab Police had filed a charge sheet against Bishnoi and Brar — the alleged masterminds and conspirators — as well as other suspects. Brar is suspected to be in the US.

“The recording that we have intercepted is an inference to Sidhu Moosewala. All the recordings that the investigating team have are cryptic in nature. They don’t name the victims. There are multiple recordings of these gang members talking about killing other singers, extortions, etc,” the source said.

In November, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) booked Bishnoi under the stringent Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) before probing his suspected links with terror outfits.

Additionally, the UAPA was slapped against Goldy Brar, Vikram Brar as well as members of rival gangs — Davinder Bambiha, Kaushal Chaudhary, Neeraj Bawana, Sunil alias Tillu Tajpuriya, Dilpreet and Sukhpreet alias Budha and also deceased Harvinder Rinda.
