New Delhi: The University Grants Commission (UGC), in its latest order Wednesday, asked universities to fix the last date for enrolment in undergraduate courses after the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Class 12 results are declared.
This comes after the CBSE approached the UGC, saying that some universities had begun their admissions process despite the Class 12 results not having been declared. According to CBSE, the results are to be expected in the last week of July.
“It has come to notice that some universities have started registration in undergraduate courses for the session 2022-23. In this scenario, the students of CBSE will be deprived of admission in the undergraduate courses if the last date is fixed by the universities prior to CBSE result declaration,” said Wednesday’s notice, signed by UGC Secretary Rajnish Jain.
The letter, marked to principals of colleges and directors of other higher educational institutes, adding that “all the higher education institutions may fix the last date of their undergraduate admission process after declaration of result of Class XII by CBSE so as to provide sufficient time to such students for admissions in UG courses”.
UGC chairman M. Jagadesh Kumar also shared the order in a tweet Wednesday.
However, Kumar, during the launch of CUET (Common University Entrance Test) in March, had said that central universities would have to use CUET scores to enroll students in undergraduate courses instead of marks they secured in Class 12.
The UGC has announced that the CUET will be conducted in two phases between 15 July and 4 August.
CBSE’s request to UGC
The CBSE had conducted class 12 examinations in two phases for the academic year 2021-22. While the results for the first examination have been announced, students are still awaiting the declaration of the final results.
Last year, the CBSE had come up with a special assessment scheme after cancellation of Class 10 and 12 exams for the academic session 2020-21 due to the pandemic. The notification said that the academic session 2021-22 would be divided into two terms, with each term encompassing 50 per cent of the syllabus.
This notice by the UGC was issued after the CBSE approached the commission, demanding that registration dates for enrollment in undergraduate courses be fixed keeping in mind the dates for Class 12 results.
“It has come to the notice that some universities in India, especially in Maharashtra, have started registration in undergraduate courses for the session (2022-’23) and their last date is in the first week of July,” CBSE wrote to the UGC in a letter dated June 28.
The letter added, “It is, therefore, requested that all the universities may please be directed to fix the last date of their undergraduate admission process keeping in mind the date of result declaration of Class XII by CBSE.”
