New Delhi: The Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) will adopt the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) for admitting students into eight undergraduate (UG) programmes for the 2022-23 academic session.

“The decision was taken in a meeting attended by the top officials of the university on Monday. The university has also communicated to the University Grants Commission (UGC) and National Testing Agency (NTA) about the same,” the varsity said in a statement.

JMI is a Delhi-based central university. UGC chairman M. Jagadesh Kumar had last week announced that all central universities will have to implement CUET for admission into UG courses from the 2022-23 academic year. He had also emphasised that CUET will not tamper with the existing reservation policies of special institutions.

The eight UG programmes for which the entrance examination will be conducted are BA (Hon) Hindi, BA (Hon) Sanskrit, BA (Hon) French, BA (Hon) Spanish, BA (Hon) Economics, BA (Hon) History, B. Sc. Biotechnology and B. Voc (Solar Energy).

The university has also specified that in order to be eligible for the examination a student will have to obtain at least 50 per cent marks in aggregate or in the subject concerned.

However, the university also said that it will admit students in the B.Tech programme on the basis of their JEE scores and admission into BDS programme will be done on the basis of their score in NEET. B.Tech aspirants are required to fill the JEE as well as the JMI application forms.

Being a minority institution, JMI follows special reservation policies. The varsity reserves 50 per cent of its seats for minority candidates. The university had previously conducted its own entrance examination for admission into all UG courses.

Nazim Hussain Jaffery, registrar of JMI, had earlier told ThePrint, “We will be holding meetings with the Academic and the Executive Council of the university to decide on the matter of the implementation of CUET.”
