New Delhi: Jamia Millia Islamia has been ranked among the top 10 universities in the country Thursday in the National Institutional Ranking Framework’s (NIRF) 2020 list of universities.

The varsity had, earlier this year, seen large instances of student protests, violence and clashes with the police over the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

Ranked 10th in the NIRF’s listing, this is a major jump for the Jamia Millia Islamia which had not made it to the top 10 in the last five years. The varsity had bagged the 12th position last year.

In the overall category of NIRF’s listing, the university has bagged the 16th rank, an improvement from last year’s 20th position.

Expressing her delight over the university’s performance, Vice Chancellor Najma Akhtar said in a statement: “The achievement is all the more significant because of the challenging time the university has faced recently and also in the light of increased competition in the ranking.”

She added that the achievement was possible due to relevant and high quality research done by its members, as well as teaching methods of its dedicated and devoted faculty.

Akhtar attributed the ranking to an improved perception about the university with regard to its teaching, placements and research. She also hoped that the university will do even better in the coming years.

NIRF 2020 was released Thursday though video conference because of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. The institutions are ranked on the basis of various parameters carrying different weightage such as teaching and learning, research, graduation outcomes, outreach and peer perception.

Anti-CAA protests

Students of Jamia were mired in controversy after large scale protests against the CAA took place around the campus.

Many were allegedly attacked by the Delhi Police during the agitation. The students have also claimed that the police had entered the Jamia campus, beat them up and damaged university property.

Akhtar had earlier said that the university suffered damages worth over Rs 2 crore.

  1. Oh my god. Jamia cannot be in the top ten. We need to vilify Muslim students and universities. Can we claim on social media that this ranking was somehow influenced by liberals and even people from Nepal and across Kashmir.
