New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged various stakeholders in the field of education to ensure effective implementation of the new National Education Policy released last week.

Modi asked for active discussion on the policy in the coming days, and urged the stakeholders to prepare a strategy and roadmap for implementation of the policy.

He was addressing more than 1,000 universities and various other higher education institutions, including Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and others, at the ‘Conclave on Transformational Reforms in Higher Education under National Education Policy’.

National education policy will not be implemented merely through a circular or a notification. All of you need to have the will to work towards implementation of the policy,” Modi said while addressing the heads of various higher education institutions and officials from the Ministry of Education.

‘Universities, school boards should come up with strategies’

The PM said various stakeholders such as universities, colleges, school boards and states will need to have separate discussions and come up with a strategy.

He also termed various discussions on the policy as being “healthy” and encouraged people to have more discussions.

It’s a matter of delight that after the policy was released, no one called it biased or one-sided. A lot of discussions are happening on the policy now,” he added. “People from different regions having different points of view are reviewing the policy. That kind of discussion and debate should happen, it’s a healthy debate.”

Dwelling upon various aspects of the policy, like the 5+3+3+4 school education pattern, the multiple exit option in college and emphasis on vocational education, Modi said the policy will “lay the foundation of the new India of the 21st century”.

He also congratulated Dr K. Kasturirangan, former ISRO chief who headed the panel that drafted the education policy. The PM congratulated the team for a policy document that is “free of controversies” and “focuses on the future”.
