New Delhi: Students preparing to write their CBSE Class 10 and 12 examinations across India will now be able to learn from past toppers.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is making answer sheets of toppers from previous years available to students of Class 10 and 12 to help them score better — weeks after the Delhi government started this initiative for its schools affiliated to the board.

A CBSE official said answer sheets of students who scored 100 out of 100 in subjects like science and mathematics will help other students understand how to attempt a question paper better. It will give an idea on how to apply the correct formulae, equations and methods while solving a question.

Not just science and mathematics, the board has also decided to make public answer sheets of all subjects, including those of languages and social science. The CBSE has already started providing some answer sheets to the schools online through a portal that can be accessed only by teachers and schools.

“Schools can show the answer sheets to students who are going to write Class 10 and 12 board exams as samples and make them aware of the minute details of attempting the question paper, including what mistakes not to make,” a senior CBSE official said.

‘Will serve as study material’

The Delhi government had first started this initiative on its own in September for schools affiliated to the CBSE. It told schools to show answer sheets of past high scorers to students preparing to write board examinations. These answer sheets had to be procured with the help of the board.

In a circular, the education department had said teachers could use the answer-sheets to motivate students, and that it would help students improve their writing skills and also develop an effective technique to attempt a question paper.

Teachers have appreciated the move.

“We have already started giving answer sheets of toppers to students who are going to appear for their Class 10 and 12 exams, and it serves as a study material for students,” said B.K. Sharma, principal of Shaheed Hemu Kalani Sarvodaya Bal Vidyalaya, Delhi.

“Students get to see how to attempt answers…the way to write in an answer copy…they learn presentation and get an idea on the word limit as well. Many students do not know how much to write for an answer and old answer copies help,” he added.

Meera Gupta, who teaches at a CBSE school in Gujarat’s Baroda, said, “Just like sample question papers help students get an idea of the kind of questions that could be asked, sample answer sheets can also be a helpful study material. The idea is not to make students write identical answers by showing them old copies but just to give them an idea on attempting a board examination.”

CBSE has also released on its official website the sample question papers for the 2020 Class 10 and 12 students along with its marking scheme.

  1. This is a step towards killing whatever critical thinking and originality required for students to succeed in examinations. This is, in fact, harming our students in the long run. Not that scoring well in examinations had anything to do with actuall knowledge, thanks to sample papers and exam pridictions, now students will also be given the exact answers.
