New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay, Saturday awarded more than 400 doctorate degrees — the most it has ever given out in a single year.

What made this possible was the number of students pursuing doctoral degrees at the institute almost doubling over the past 10 years — with a significant portion of these students coming from engineering backgrounds.

According to IIT Bombay’s annual director’s report, released Saturday, “from 1,895 PhD students in 2011-12, the number increased to 3,534 in 2020-21, and currently stands at about 3,727”.

In a first, the institute awarded 449 PhD degrees at its 60th convocation ceremony Saturday, up from 378 in 2020-21 and 301 in 2019-20.

“It is worth noting that this is the first time that any Indian academic institute has produced more than 400 PhD graduates in a year — a major milestone for STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education in India,” Professor Subhasis Chaudhuri, director of IIT Bombay, said in his address at the convocation ceremony.

Thrust on research, exposure

Over the years, IIT Bombay has ranked highly in the Ministry of Education’s National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). It secured the third position in the “overall” and “engineering” categories, came 11th in the “management” category and fourth in the “research” category in the NIRF 2022 rankings announced last month.

Apart from faring well in the NIRF rankings, the institute allocated funds to persuade more students to pursue research, releasing Rs 39 crore in internal funds for R&D-related activities, the director’s report said.

According to the report, IIT Bombay also received external funding amounting to Rs 329.08 crore in 2021-22 for research purposes.

In 2021-22, the institute initiated 242 R&D projects with a sanctioned outlay of Rs 220 crore. These projects spanned various domains of research in science and engineering (both applied and basic), as well as the humanities, social sciences and management studies, the report said.

IIT Bombay also provided students with the opportunity to interact with the research community by facilitating travel to conferences both at home and abroad, the report said.

According to data shared in the report, during the academic year 2021-22, 277 students were granted financial assistance — amounting to Rs 3,70,29,987 — that enabled them to attend international conferences.

The institute also promoted students’ interactions with industry leaders, the report said, adding that funds amounting to Rs 8 crore were sanctioned as seed grants and augmented seed grants for research by new faculty members.
