New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has summoned Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee and his wife Rujira to Delhi next week in a coal-smuggling case.

ED files moved immediately after the Delhi High Court dismissed Banerjee’s plea to quash the summons. Banerjee is nephew to TMC chief Mamata Banerjee.

The ED also summoned Bengal minister Moloy Ghatak in the alleged coal scam. Meanwhile, the Central Bureau of Investigation has called for TMC’s Birbhum district chief Anubrata Mondal.

Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee has been scathing of central agencies ever since her nephew surfaced in the crosshairs of the CBI and ED. She accused these agencies of behaving like “caged parrots”.

“The CBI cannot be used to suppress the opposition,” Banerjee was quoted in news reports.

The chief minister is also furious because her nephew and
Rujira have been asked to appear in Delhi and not Kolkata.

BJP is the main opposition in West Bengal with 70 MLAs, but the party did not fare well in the recently-concluded civic polls.

This story has been updated to reflect a correction in BJP MLA numbers.
