New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate on Thursday questioned former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah in a bank money-laundering case.

His party, the National Conference, tweeted that Abdullah was “called by the ED to Delhi to appear before it today on the grounds that his attendance was necessary in connection with an investigation”.

NC added, “Even though this exercise is political in nature, he will cooperate as there is no wrong-doing in his part.” The party termed the ED’s move “vicious vilification”.

ED officials said Abdullah had appeared before them at 11 am Thursday.

Central agencies have probed the Jammu and Kashmir Bank since 2021 for alleged irregularities in sanctioning loans and investments.

The Central Bureau of Investigation has also booked former bank chairman Mushtaq Ahmed Shaikh in the case.

The ED initiated a case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act after the CBI’s first-investigation report in the alleged scam.

After the interrogation, Omar Abdullah told reporters: “The ED didn’t accuse me of anything. They called me for questioning in connection with an ongoing investigation of a 12 to 13-year-old case. I answered them as much as I could. I will further help them if they need me.”
