Pune, Jul 17 (PTI) The Pune unit of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) arrested a foreign national from a bus on the Mumbai-Bengaluru highway and allegedly seized 3.815 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine worth Rs 7.63 crore from her, an official said on Thursday.
The woman, who was travelling from Delhi to the Karnataka capital, was held on a specific tip-off that she was carrying psychotropic substances, the DRI official said.
“A team comprising personnel from DRI and Customs in Pune mounted surveillance along the highway and intercepted the suspect in transit. An initial search of the passenger and her baggage did not yield any contraband. However, during a detailed rummaging of the bus, officers located a second bag concealed at the rear of the vehicle,” the official said.
“A thorough inspection of the hidden baggage revealed six salwar suits, each folded with specially designed cardboard inserts. These inserts had cavities lined with polythene, which contained a white crystalline substance. Field testing confirmed the presence of amphetamine in the 3.815 kg of recovered substance, which is suspected to be crystal meth,” the official added.
She was arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and further probe into the smuggling network is underway, he added. PTI SPK BNM
