New Delhi: The Delhi government has allowed self-employed persons including plumbers, electricians and those servicing water purifiers to resume work in the national capital starting Tuesday, even as the nationwide lockdown continues.

Interstate and intrastate movement of medical and veterinary personnel, nurses, scientists, paramedical staff, lab technicians and other hospital support services, including ambulances, have also been permitted, according to a late night order issued Monday by Delhi Chief Secretary Vijay Dev.

Air travel for these persons can also resume.

The order, a copy of which was seen by ThePrint, also mentioned dispensaries, clinics, pathology labs, and sale and supply of vaccine and medicines.

While sale of medicines was permitted ever since the lockdown was imposed on 24 March, Delhi government officials told ThePrint that some clinics and dispensaries chose to remain closed. To avoid any further confusion, the order made it clear that these must operate in public interest.

The move has came after a committee constituted by the Delhi Disaster Management Authority to monitor the supply chain and logistics of essential items suggested that persons rendering services such as electricians and plumbers be allowed to work even if the lockdown is extended beyond 3 May.

The relaxations, however, won’t apply to the 99 containment zones in Delhi, said the officials.

Other decisions

According to the order, regular operations in shelter homes for persons with disabilities, elderly people, children and widows, will be allowed.

Some of these services were already operational amid the lockdown.

However, a Delhi government official clarified that the shelter homes can now release people who didn’t require these facilities anymore, or admit more.

The government has directed the Delhi Police to ensure that status quo be maintained across the national capital with regard to the other curbs, until further orders.

The neighbouring states of Haryana and the Uttar Pradesh have both recently imposed curbs on the movement of people, including rendering essential services, to and from Delhi.

Delhi reported 190 fresh Covid-19 cases Monday, taking the total to 3,108, while the death toll stood at 54.
