New Delhi: BJP spokesperson Tajinder Pal Singh Bagga has been detained from his West Delhi residence by Punjab Police Friday, days after he was booked for criminal intimidation and allegedly making provocative statements and promoting enmity.

The BJP leader had been attacking Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal over his views on the movie “The Kashmir Files”. He came under fire from the AAP, which is in power in Delhi and Punjab, for his tweet against Kejriwal.

“Following due process of law, Tajinder Pal Singh Bagga was arrested in the morning at his home in Janakpuri, New Delhi,” said Punjab Police.

Meanwhile, Delhi Police have registered a kidnapping case after the arrest of the 36-year-old leader.

Bagga is currently being brought to Punjab and will be produced in court. Further investigation is being done by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of SAS Nagar Police, Mohali, the state police said.

The BJP leader’s father, Preetpal Singh Bagga, claimed that 10 to 15 police personnel came to their home and dragged out his son.

“When I picked up my mobile phone to record a video of the incident, the police took me to another room and punched me in the face,” Bagga’s father told ANI.

Punjab Police said that Bagga, who is the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) national secretary, was served five notices but he did not join the probe.

Case against Bagga

The police had said that an FIR was registered against Bagga on 1 April in connection with a cyber crime case for “causing instigation, criminal intimidation to cause violence, imminent hurt by publishing false and communal inflammatory statements on social media”.

Bagga’s arrest has sparked a political row with the BJP alleging that the Aam Aadmi Party is misusing the police to target political opponents. The BJP workers started protesting against Kejriwal and the Punjab Police outside the Janakpuri Police Station.

BJP IT department head Amit Malviya tweeted, “Arvind Kejriwal’s brazen misuse of Punjab police to target political opponents is not unexpected. He had been raging for this. But this won’t go down well. We will fight to secure every single karyakarta of ours and ensure that Kejriwal learns how to handle power the hard way.”

BJP National General Secretary BL Santhosh alleged that Punjab Police is being used as a personal mafia of Kejriwal.

While, Tesajvi Surya, National President of BJP Yuva Morcha, hit out at Delhi CM and said, “You have messed with the wrong guys.”
