New Delhi, Jul 18 (PTI) A criminal wanted in a Rs 30 lakh dacoity at a businessman’s farmhouse last month was arrested following an exchange of fire with police in southwest Delhi’s Bijwasan area, an official said on Friday.
With the arrest of Dinesh Verma alias Billu (40), all 11 gang members involved in the high-profile armed robbery at the farmhouse in Ghitorni on June 24 have been arrested, the police said.
A case regarding the decoity was registered at Vasant Kunj South police station.
After spotting Verma near Dwarka Expressway Flyover on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday, police teams signalled him to stop. However, he opened fire and one bullet hit the bulletproof jacket of a head constable, an officer said.
“The police retaliated and Verma sustained a gunshot wound to his right leg. He was later admitted to Indira Gandhi Hospital in Dwarka,” the officer said.
A pistol with live cartridges and a stolen motorcycle without a number plate were recovered from Verma’s possession, the officer added.
“The robbery was planned with insider help, and Verma was the mastermind who supplied weapons and led the execution of the crime,” the officer said.
All 11 accused have been arrested, including the complainant’s former driver Adesh Kumar who played a key role in the conspiracy, he said.
An SUV and mobile phones used during the robbery, along with around Rs 7 lakh cash, were recovered, the police said.
Verma, a resident of Ghaziabad, is a hardcore criminal with cases of murder, robbery and Arms Act registered against him. He is also wanted in an attempt to muder case in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur, the police said.
The other accused have been identified as Satender Singh (34) and Anil (54) — both working as the complainant’s drivers — Santosh Tripathi from Madhya Pradesh, Shammi (59) from Delhi, Amit Kumar, Ashish alias Nilu, Vikas Chaudhary, Devender Singh alias Gandhi, Arvind Tyagi of Meerut, they said.
“Seven out of the 11 arrested are found to be involved in multiple heinous crimes. With their arrest, the entire dacoity case has been solved,” the officer said. PTI BM APL NB
