Mumbai: A 23-year-old woman has been arrested for allegedly murdering her mother and living with her decomposed body for around two months at their home in Mumbai’s Lalbaug area, police said Wednesday.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Pravin Munde said that the deceased, identified as 55-year-old Veena Jain, had been living with her daughter, Rimple, in a chawl. The police went to their home after Veena’s brother filed a missing complaint Tuesday.
“We found the body in a plastic bag in a steel cupboard and after the preliminary enquiry, we have arrested her daughter in this case,” he said.
An FIR has been registered at the Kalachowki police station under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 302 (murder), 201 (causing disappearance of evidence) and sections of Arms Act.
The police said that Veena had last met her brother on 26 November, and over the past two months, whenever he would go to meet her, Rimple would either say she was sleeping or had gone out.
However, a few days ago, the neighbours told Veena’s brother that they hadn’t seen her for a long time. When the family members went to meet her Tuesday and didn’t find her at home, they got suspicious and filed a complaint, the police said.
The body has been sent for post-mortem and further investigation is on.
