New Delhi: A woman was injured when a DCP-rank officer of the Delhi Police allegedly threw glasses around at a pub in Delhi’s Greater Kailash Friday night.

After the news broke, Delhi Police sources said the complainant retracted her complaint, calling it an “internal matter”, with the force’s spokesperson adding that “it was a family matter that has been resolved”.

However, the Delhi Police on Saturday evening relieved DCP (Dwarka) Shankar Choudhary of his present charge with “immediate effect”, sources confirmed to ThePrint. The IPS officer of AGMUT cadre, posted as a Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), has been asked to report to the Delhi Police Headquarters.

“Shankar Choudhary, IPS 2011 is hereby relieved from his duty as DCP/Dwarka, Delhi with immediate effect and directed to report to Police headquarters for further orders,” the order issued by DCP (headquarters) Mahesh Batra reads.

The exact reason behind the move isn’t known.

Asked if there is any relation between the alleged incident and him being relieved of his present charge, IPS Shankar Choudhary told ThePrint, “not as per me”.

The DCP-rank officer was attending a birthday party at a pub in Delhi’s Greater Kailash Friday night when the alleged incident took place, leaving the woman injured.

Delhi Police PRO issued a statement Saturday, confirming that a PCR call was received in this regard in the early hours of 4 June.

“A PCR call was received in the wee hours of 4th June at PS Greater Kailash in which it was mentioned that an officer of Delhi Police of the rank of DCP has assaulted a lady at a birthday party in a private club,” the Delhi Police PRO said in a statement Saturday.

“Subsequently, a video clip of the victim was received wherein she stated that she along with her family were celebrating the birthday party of a family member. The concerned officer was also present along with his family. During the function a glass fell upon the lady & she was injured. The husband of the lady got infuriated upon this as one person in the party was playing with the glass at that time. Due to a miscommunication the name of the DCP cropped up in the ensuing commotion. The matter has been resolved as it was a family issue,” the statement added.

“DCP xxxx is drunk, has hit my wife with a glass, amid a fight with someone else. My wife is injured. I have brought her to Max hospital for treatment,” says the general diary entry at Greater Kailash police station, accessed by ThePrint.

However, a Delhi Police source said that the DCP has claimed that he wasn’t present at the pub in question at the time of the incident.
