Bhopal, Jul 18 (PTI) Congress workers on Friday protested against the hike in the charge of `Sulabh Shouchalay’ (community toilet) here, demanding a rollback.
The Bhopal Municipal Corporation has given its nod to raise the Sulabh Shouchalay charge to Rs 10 from Rs 6, claimed Congress corporator Yogendra Singh Chauhan `Guddu’.
Civic sources said the Mayor-in-Council has given its approval for the hike but the order has not been yet issued.
“Bhopal has achieved the second rank in the country in the cleanliness survey among cities with a population of more than 10 lakh. People here are getting subsidized food for Rs 5, but they have to shell out Rs 10 for relieving themselves which is too much,” Chauhan told reporters during the protest outside the community toilet near the busy market number 6.
Common people can not afford to pay Rs 10 to use a public toilet, he said, adding that it will encourage defecation in the open which will spoil the city’s image.
Public toilets should either be free, or charge Rs 2 to 4, he said. PTI MAS KRK
