New Delhi: The Congress had lost contact with the people when in power, senior leader Jairam Ramesh said Tuesday, adding that the party’s ongoing cross-country march was attempting to rectify that.

Ramesh, the party’s general secretary in-charge of communications, said: “The Bharat Jodo Yatra is promoting door-to-door contact which we had forgotten. We had forgotten because we were in power. We are remembering it with this Yatra.”

The party’s outreach initiative – the Bharat Jodo Yatra – began from Kanyakumari on 7 September and will end in Kashmir, after traversing through over a dozen states.

Speaking to reporters at Washim in Maharashtra, where the Yatra is now, Ramesh said the march has also “connected the party and promoted togetherness”. “Its effects, if any, would show up during the 2024 elections,” the politician added.

He also said the Yatra’s ultimate aim was above politics.

The party has called the Yatra as “India’s biggest mass contact program” which aimed to take people’s concerns to Delhi. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is helming the 3,500-kilometre march.
