New Delhi: A father’s desperate attempt to put a stop on an ‘obscene’ video of his teenage daughter, allegedly shared by her ex-boyfriend – on WhatsApp, resulted in his death on Saturday in Gujarat.

The incident also left his son in a critical condition and suffering from memory loss, sources in BSF and Gujarat Police said.

BSF Head Constable Melaji Bhai was home for holidays in Kheda when he found out about a leaked video of his teenage daughter doing the rounds online. The malicious act was allegedly committed by the guy after attempts to get back with her via blackmailing failed.

According to BSF sources, the father had been recently transferred to Rajasthan’s Barmer from Gujarat. He had initially gone to the boy’s house and requested his family to take the video down.

The next day, however, after noticing that the video hadn’t been removed, he called up the boy’s family to ask about it. They allegedly responded by asking the father to come over to their house for a talk.

“Upon reaching there, the family members of the boy were waiting with laths (similar to batons) and hit Melaji, his nephew, his elder son and wife. While Melaji died on the spot after being hit on the head, the elder son is critical. His wife and nephew also sustained injuries,” a BSF source said.

However, according to the police, an argument broke out between the two sides when the father and his family had gone to the house, which led to assault by the boy’s family.

They also said that the two were in a relationship and the boy had blackmailed the girl saying he would release the video if she ever left him.

An FIR was registered at Chaklasi police station on Sunday under Indian Penal Code sections — 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder), 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult to provoke breach of peace), 143 (unlawful assembly), 147 (rioting) 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapon), 149 (every member of unlawful assembly guilty of offence committed in prosecution of common object).

Till now, seven people have been arrested in the case. They are Dineshbhai Chabhabhai Jadhav, Arvind Bhai Chabhabhai Jadhav, Chabhabhai Chaturbhai Jadhav, Sachin Arvindbhai Jadhav, Bhavesh Chimanbhai Jadhav, Kaileshben Arvindbhai Jadhav and Shantaben Chibhai Rehman Jadhav.

Meanwhile, sources in the Gujarat police told ThePrint that the process of registering a case against the boy under sections of POCSO was underway. According to police, the boy has been missing from his house even before the visit by the girl’s father to warn him.

“The boy had leaked an objectionable video of the girl on WhatsApp which reached her elder brother, who told the father. He then reached the house of the accused and told his family member’s to take the video down. The following day, he called them up telling them that the video hasn’t been taken down and that now he will take action.

“In turn the accused family asked him to come to their house. Melaji reached there with his wife, elder son and nephew. An argument broke out between them the two parties following which the family of the boy started assaulting them with the laths. The accused started abusing the girl’s family,” the police source said.
