Gorakhpur (UP), May 24 (PTI) A brother and sister drowned in the river Saryu on Sunday morning, while local divers rescued their teenage aunt after the trio slipped into deep water near a temple ghat in the Gola area here while bathing, police said.
Police said the deceased Prince (11) and Shivani (13) were residents of Usri village under Sikriganj police station limits. Their aunt, Maya (16), a resident of Mehda village, is undergoing treatment and is stated to be out of danger.
According to police, the children had come to their maternal grandparents’ home during school vacations. On Sunday, around 9:00 am, they went with Maya to visit a Hanuman temple near the river. After offering prayers, the three entered the river to bathe, police said.
Police said Prince allegedly slipped into deep water first, then Shivani attempted to save her brother but also got trapped in the strong current. Maya rushed to help them and was also swept into nearly 40-feet-deep water, police said.
Hearing screams, villagers rushed to the spot.
A resident, Chandramal Yadav, jumped into the river and managed to rescue Maya and Prince.
Both were taken to a community health centre, where doctors declared Prince dead, police said.
Shivani’s body was recovered nearly two hours later with the help of divers.
SHO of Gola police station, Prahlad Singh, said the bodies were recovered with the help of local divers and sent for post-mortem examination after completing of legal formalities. PTI COR NAV ASD ASD
