New Delhi: Students from various Delhi universities came together at Jantar Mantar Friday to protest against the alleged kidnapping and murder of two men by cow vigilantes in Haryana’s Bhiwani district last week.

The protest was organised by the All India Students Association.

“Killing people arbitrarily and calling it ‘mob justice’ has become very casual now. The police, which is responsible for maintaining law and order, was told to return from the site. The name of the prime accused was taken down,” said Neha (who goes by her first name), a PhD student at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, and one of the organisers of the protest.

She added, “Students have historically been at the forefront of raising voices to uphold the constitutional values of the country. We all have called this protest to seek accountability for this act of violence against two people from the minority community, merely on the basis of suspicion.”

The charred remains of Junaid and Nasir — two Rajasthan men — were found inside an SUV — near Barawas village in Bhiwani last Thursday. The car had also been set on fire.

The accused include several cow vigilantes from Haryana, including Bajrang Dal member Monu Manesar of Haryana.

“In Haryana, there was a mahapanchayat carried out in support of Manesar. Devendra Singh, who is a Bajrang Dal leader, is openly daring the Rajasthan Police. We demand that this kind of blatant and open call for violence on Muslims should not take place in this country,” said Saumya (identified by her first name), an Ambedkar University student.
