Indore, Jul 20 (PTI) Leader of Opposition in the Madhya Pradesh assembly Umang Singhar on Sunday termed the arrest of Chaitanya Baghel, son of former Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel, in the Rs 2,100 crore liquor scam, as “illegal”.

Talking to reporters, the Congress leader claimed the voices of the people and dissent were being suppressed across the country.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday arrested Chaitanya Baghel in an alleged liquor scam-linked money laundering case. The probe agency claimed that he received Rs 16.70 crore in the scam and played a key role in handling more than Rs 1,000 crore that constituted the proceeds of crime.

“The arrest of former Chhattisgarh CM Baghel’s son is illegal and against the law. People’s voices and dissent are being suppressed across the country. The BJP is harassing the families of our leaders, Bhupesh Baghel and Rahul Gandhi,” Singhar said.

People raising their voices against the BJP government on social media were being hounded, he claimed, adding that the BJP wants to end democracy in the country.

Taking a swipe at Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, Singhar said he should inform the state legislative assembly about the investments he managed to get for the state during his official visit to Dubai and Spain.

“CM Yadav loves tourism, which is why he visited Spain and Dubai on the pretext of attracting investment for MP,” he alleged.

He said the chief minister should inform the assembly about the places he visited and the investment he attracted for MP.

“As the money spent on his foreign trip was public money, the people have the right to know about his tour expenditure and its benefits,” the Congress leader said.

Yadav had embarked on an official visit to Dubai and Spain from July 13 to 19. PTI COR LAL ARU
