Ahmedabad, Jul 17 (PTI) The Congress on Thursday appointed five-time MLA Amit Chavda as the president of the party’s Gujarat unit.
Chavda, who was earlier on the post between 2018 and 2021, replaces Rajya Sabha member Shaktsinh Gohil, the latter having resigned on June 23 following the Congress’ defeat in the bypolls to Kadi and Visavadar assembly seats. The seats were won by BJP and Aam Aadmi Party, respectively.
Gohil, a Rajya Sabha member, was appointed as the state Congress president in June 2023 in the run-up to the 2024 general elections.
In a statement, the party announced the appointment of Chavda as the new president of its Gujarat unit, while senior MLA and former Union minister Tushar Chaudhary has been made the Congress Legislature Party leader in the Assembly replacing Chavda.
Chavda, a prominent OBC leader who represents Anklav seat of Anand district, was one of the 16 Congress MLAs elected in the 2022 polls, which were swept by the BJP. The ruling party retained power with 156 seats in the 182-member House.
Chavda, a vocal supporter of SC, ST, OBCs and minorities, had resigned as Gujarat Congress president after the party’s lacklustre performance in the 2021 local body polls.
Ahead of the 2022 assembly polls, Congress had appointed former MP Jagdish Thakor as its Gujarat chief but he resigned after the party’s debacle in the polls. After Thakor, Gohil was appointed as the state Congress president in June 2023. PTI PJT BNM
