New Delhi, Jul 17 (PTI) In a bid to ease the growing traffic congestion in the national capital, the Public Works Department has planned a comprehensive 47-kilometre Transit Corridor, which entails eight flyovers or underpasses at major choke points across the city.

Towards this, it has ordered a detailed study of traffic volume on the corridors and street network plan, officials said.

The eight heavily congested stretches identified by the government are Deshbandhu Gupta Road in Paharganj, ITO intersection, NSG intersection in front of IGI Airport Terminal 1, flyover at Shadipur depot, Nanaksar Gurudwara T-point to Delhi-UP border, flyover at Shivaji Marg, over a railway line at Sukhi Nahar, and flyover at Najafgarh-Phirni Road.

In Central Delhi, at ITO, which is one of the most congested stretches across the city, the PWD will study a four-kilometre stretch on the ITO flyover, Vikas Marg to Deendayal Upadhaya Marg, and the W-point Skywalk towards Delhi Gate.

“Currently, the stretch is heavily congested due to a mix of slow-moving vehicles and cross movements during peak and non-peak hours, causing heavy congestion. There are also several government offices in the area,” the official said.

The PWD has also ordered a study of the two-kilometre stretch on Shivaji Marg from Zakhira crossing to Karampura flyover. The stretch is regionally important for traffic movement in the West Delhi areas of Moti Nagar, Kirti Nagar, Patel Nagar and Karampura.

To provide relief to people travelling to Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, the department is planning to decongest the main access road and junction near the NSG headquarters.

“A feasibility study will be conducted to determine whether the construction of an underpass, flyover or both is the goal of decongestion. This road carries traffic destined for Delhi, IGI Airport and Gurugram,” the plan states.

Another project, the Najafgarh-Phirni road, which was first mooted by the previous government, has been revived.  On this corridor, the study will be focused on the decongestion of two different roads: the area from Najafgarh-Phirni Road to NH-48 (near Kapashera), and a portion of Old Delhi-Gurgram Road from Urban Extension Road-ll to Kapashera border, New Delhi.

“The entire 20-kilometre stretch features a total of 15 traffic signals, most of which are strategically positioned at key intersections and in areas characterised by high population density or significant pedestrian activity,” the official said.

According to the tender issued, the consultant will carry out a traffic volume count for all categories of vehicles for 24 hours on any working day, showing all turning movements with classification of vehicles at intersections.

Apart from carrying out surveys of buildings and encroachments, the consultants will also conduct a cost-benefit analysis of the scheme by taking into account the economic, environmental and social costs in implementing the scheme.

The study will be carried out with an outlay of Rs 14 crore, within a seven-month deadline. PTI SSM SSM RUK RUK
