New Delhi: At least seven soldiers of the Indian Army died after a vehicle carrying 26 personnel near the Line of Control in Ladakh’s Turtuk sector fell into the Shyok river Friday.

According to sources in the defence and security establishment, the remaining 19 soldiers have sustained severe injuries.

The incident took place around 9 am, when the party was about 25 km from Thoise. They were being moved from a transit camp in Partapur near Siachen to a forward location in sub-sector Hanif. The vehicle skidded off the road and fell to a depth of approximately 50-60 feet in the Shyok river. This resulted in injuries to all on-board, sources affiliated with the matter told ThePrint.

All 26 soldiers were first rushed to the 403 Field Hospital in Partapur and surgical teams from Leh were transported to treat them, sources told ThePrint. Seven of them were declared dead. The remaining 19 injured soldiers were later airlifted to the Western Command’s Chandi Mandir hospital in Haryana’s Panchkula, sources told ThePrint.

The Chandi Mandir cantonment is the headquarters of the Indian Army’s Western Command.

This is a developing story. It will be updated with more inputs.
