Srinagar: Two CRPF personnel were killed and three injured as militants attacked a group of security personnel in Pulwama district’s Pampore area Monday, police said. The security personnel were part of a road opening party (ROP), which is deployed on certain stretches for safe movement of vehicles.

Militants opened fire near the Kandizel Bridge, near the national highway in Pampore area, around 12.50 pm.

According to a CRPF spokesperson in Srinagar, the ROP came under attack around Monday noon and five personnel were left injured with multiple gunshot wounds. The injured were rushed to the Army’s 92 base hospital in Srinagar, where two CRPF personnel succumbed to their injuries.

The three others are currently undergoing treatment at the hospital.

“Unfortunately, we lost two of our jawans in the militant attack today,” said a CRPF officer, adding that the condition of the remaining three is “stable at the moment”.

According to the officer, a massive cordon-and-search operation was launched in the area soon after the attack. However, the security forces haven’t been able to find the attackers.

Search operation on

The deceased CRPF men have been identified as constables Dhirendra and Shailendra Kumar of the 110 battalion. The personnel are residents of Uttar Pradesh’s Rae Bareli and Madhya Pradesh’s Satna area, a second CRPF officer told ThePrint.

“Preliminary  reports suggest that at least two militants were behind the attack. Most likely, one was driving a vehicle and the other launched the attack by firing indiscriminately. The search operations are currently underway,” said the senior CRPF officer.

According to CRPF officers, the national highway where the attack occurred was sealed immediately after the attack, and civilian traffic barred from moving towards south Kashmir and Srinagar.

“The highway has been temporarily closed till we take stock of the situation,” the senior CRPF officer added.
