15 injured as two-storey building collapses in Mumbai

Mumbai, Jul 18 (PTI) Fifteen people including three senior citizens were injured as a two-storey chawl or tenement building collapsed in Bandra area here in the early hours of Friday, a civic official said.

Chawl number 37 in Bharat Nagar area in Bandra (East) collapsed around 5.56 am.

Of those injured, 12 were admitted to the municipal Bhabha Hospital while the search and rescue operation was still going on, the official said.

Mahammad Ansari (68) and Rehana Ansari (65), who suffered 50 percent burn injuries, were shifted to the civic-run KEM hospital for further treatment from Bhabha Hospital. The official could not explain immediately how they suffered burn injuries.

Barring a man who left hospital against doctors’ advice, all injured persons were undergoing treatment and were in stable condition, the official said.

The victims include an 80-year-old man and two teenagers.

Teams of Fire Brigade, police and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation were involved in the rescue operation. PTI KK VT ARU KRK
