It’s a Gujarat minister with PM Modi in viral image, not Oreva founder linked to Morbi incident

Private firm Oreva is under scanner for allegedly doing a shoddy job of repairing the colonial-era bridge in Gujarat's Morbi that snapped Sunday evening killing at least 135 people.

New Delhi: A photograph of Prime Minister Narendra Modi with one Raghavji Patel has gone viral on the net with several claiming the man to be the founder of the firm that repaired the ill-fated bridge in Morbi which went down Sunday evening, killing at least 135 people.

Several Twitter handles, including two from the Congress Party, identified the man as Odhavji Raghavji Patel, owner of the Ajanta-Oreva group that renovated the colonial-era bridge – popularly known as the “jhoolta pool” – before opening it to the public on 26 October.

The Rajasthan Youth Congress shared the photo of Modi with the man, asking pointedly: “Who is responsible (for the deaths)?”

The official account of the Odisha Youth Congress also shared the photo, captioning it: “The man who got the contract to repair and maintain the #MorbiBridge is also a Modi crony…”

The picture was tweeted more than a 100 times with similar claims.

Fact Check

The man in the photograph is another Raghavji Patel, a politician who is currently serving as Minister of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry in Gujarat.

A few twitter users, however, tweeted a photo of the correct Odhavji Raghavji Patel, albeit with Narendra Modi at what looks like a company function.

Odhavji Raghavi Patel, who was a science teacher before turning entrepreneur in his middle ages, died in Morbi in October 2012 at 87.

The Ajanta-Oreva group is now led by Jaysukhbhai Bhalodia, managing director of the Ajanta Manufacturing Private Limited, and director of Ajanta Energy and four other organisations.
