Photos of Pashto singer Neelam Gul, who was allegedly thrashed by her husband in August, are being circulated on Twitter with an incorrect caption.

New Delhi: Photos of a Kashmiri woman with bruises on her face have been doing the rounds on social media. While the caption suggests she was tortured by security forces personnel during a cordon and search operation (CASO) in Kashmir’s Shopian, the woman is, in fact, a victim of domestic violence.

A number of people have shared the images with the wrong caption, alleging excesses by security forces during anti-insurgency operations.

“How they are ruining the dignity of our mothers sisters and daughters. They have beaten her ruthlessly. Her face shows the signs of brutality. Her face express the helplessness. SHOPIAN during CASO. KASHMIR,” the caption reads.

However, this is a clear case of fake news. The photos being circulated are screen-grabs from a video of Pashto singer and actress Neelam Gul, which were posted on 3 August alleging that her husband had physically abused her.

Neelam was in Nowshera district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. In the video, she can be seen stating that the bruises were from the assault by her husband, and was seeking help for the same.

The first tweet of this fabricated news was posted by @IrshadShabnum Tuesday, which has secured 131 likes and has been retweeted 102 times. Many Twitter users have also been countering the fake news by posting the original video and news articles about the actual incident.

The fake post comes after the news of a civilian getting injured in an exchange of fire between militants and government forces in Pulwama district surfaced last week.

The encounter took place during a search operation in Niloora village.

Correction: An earlier version of this article stated that Neelam Gul belonged to Nowshera region in Jammu and Kashmir, which has been corrected to Nowshera district in Pakistan. The error is regretted.
