NCP leader’s tweet hinting at EVM manipulation by the ruling party is factually incorrect, the margins in the four polls ranged from 2,000 to 42,396.
The BJP came on top in the Uttar Pradesh civic body elections, winning 14 of the 16 mayoral posts up for grabs in results that were announced last week.
On Sunday evening, Dr Jitendra Awhad, a member of the Nationalist Congress Party, tweeted from his verified account that the BJP had won the civic polls in Bareilly, Jhansi, Firozabad, and Saharanpur by identical margins of 12,784 votes.
The implication was that the BJP manipulated the electronic voting machines used in the civic polls. Several other accounts on Twitter also alleged the same.
However, data from the state Election Commission shows that the BJP had a victory margin of 12,784 votes only in Bareilly. The margin was 16,381 in Jhansi, 42,396 in Firozabad, and 2,000 in Saharanpur.
ThePrint has reached out to Awhad for his comment, and will update this report when he responds.
