New Delhi: Uttar Pradesh BJP spokesperson Prashant Umrao Friday evening tweeted a video of former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Kamal Nath saying that if 90 per cent of the Muslims don’t vote for Congress, it will be a great loss for the party.

“Kamal Nath is repeatedly exposing his chameleon-like nature. After creating the drama of bowing down in Bageshwar Dham, entire focus is on Muslim votes,” Umrao wrote in the tweet that has over 989 retweets, 2,266 likes and over 30,000 views.

Two weeks ago, Kamal Nath had visited Bageshwar Dham and met with Pandit Dhirendra Krishna Shastri. Social media platforms of the state Congress unit routinely describe him as “future CM”, with assembly elections due later this year.

Zeenat Rana, Chandigarh social media in-charge for the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, (BJYM) tweeted the same video posted by Umrao around the same time and wrote: “The one who could not be true to his own religion, how can he be true to us? This love of Kamal Nath for the Muslim community is not something new, but playing with the sentiments of Hindus by going to Bageshwar Dham is not forgivable”.

Wasim R Khan, whose Twitter bio says ‘president, BJP Mumbai Minority Morcha’, also tweeted the clip and said: “Kamal Nathji, leave 90 per cent, now Congress will not even get 9 per cent of Muslim votes because today Muslims have understood that the development of the country will take place under BJP led by Narendra Modi’s leadership (sic)”.

Factcheck:

In the video, Nath can be heard talking to party workers about Muslim vote count figures and those who know about the vote shares of Muslims.

Umrao’s insinuation about when the video was shot is wrong. ThePrint found out that the clip of Kamal Nath purportedly speaking about Muslim vote share and its importance had gone viral four years ago
