Weekend testing dips below 9 lakh, positivity rate at 5.2%, 45,231 Covid cases in 24 hrs

New Delhi: The number of Covid-19 tests conducted in the past 24 hours reduced to 8,55,800 — a trend that is observed every weekend. In the past couple of weeks, on most weekdays, testing across the country has usually been above 10 lakh. The test positivity remains low at 5.2 per cent, as new cases detected remained below the 50,000-mark.

Active Covid cases in India continue to fall as the number of patients recovering from the disease outnumber new cases everyday.

In the last 24 hours, 45,231 people tested positive in the country. The US is the only country reporting a higher number of daily positive cases in the world.

The number of active cases continues to fall in the country, dipping to 5,61,908 Monday. This accounts for 6.83 per cent of the total cases detected in the country, so far.

India’s death toll now stands at 1,22,607, with 496 deaths reported in the last 24 hours. The country’s death toll accounts for a little over 10 per cent of the total Covid-19 deaths in the world.

Punjab, continues to have the highest case fatality rate (CFR) in the country, at 3.15. Maharashtra and Gujarat also maintain high fatality rates of 2.61 and 2.14, respectively. Kerala, the state with the second-highest burden of active cases, maintains a low CFR of 0.34. The overall case fatality rate in India has now reduced to 1.49.

Every weekend, there is significant dip in testing numbers. This week as well, the number of tests conducted in the last 24 hours dropped sharply to just 8,55,800. A total of 11,07,43,103 tests have been conducted in the country since the beginning of the pandemic. 

Positivity rate

The daily test positivity rate was 5.2 per cent over the last 24 hours, increasing slightly from 4.1 per cent Friday. The overall TPR, calculated since the beginning of the pandemic, is now about 7.4 per cent.

Recovered cases

So far, 75,44,798 people have recovered from Covid so far in India, with as many as 53,285 people discharged in the last 24 hours. The recovery rate has also increased to 91.68 per cent.

India has the highest number of recoveries in the world. Over 22 per cent of the world’s recovered Covid patients are in India.

A total of 82,29,313 cases of coronavirus have been recorded in India, so far. This accounts for over 17.5 per cent of the total Covid cases across the world.

High-burden states

Maharashtra has the highest burden of Covid cases in the country — it has reported 16,83,775 cases, so far. Of these, 1,25,672 cases are active, while 44,024 people died from disease in the state.

In the last 24 hours, 5,369 people have tested positive for Covid-19 in the state, while 113 people have died due to the infection.

In Karnataka, 50,611 Covid cases are currently active. The state has recorded 11,192 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic. The total number of cases in the state, so far, is 8,27,064. In the last 24 hours, the state reported 3,652 new cases and 24 deaths.

Tamil Nadu has reported 2,504 new cases in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of cases in the state to 7,27,026. Of these, 20,994 are active cases. The state reported 30 deaths in the last 24 hours, bringing the death toll to 11,152.

In Andhra Pradesh, 8,25,966 cases have been detected since the beginning of the pandemic. Of these 6,706 people have died and 16 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours.

As many as 2,618 people tested positive for the disease in the state in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of active cases in the state to 23,668

In Uttar Pradesh, 1,989 people tested positive for Covid-19, while 26 people died from the infection. The state currently has 23,323 active cases and as many as 7,051 people have died in the state.

A total of 4,83,832 Covid-19 cases have been detected from the state.

The test positivity rate (TPR) for Maharashtra shot up to 13.5 per cent in the last 24 hours. Since Maharashtra already has the highest burden of active cases in the country, the state needs to ramp up its testing to bring its positivity rate down.

Uttar Pradesh continues to maintain a low TPR among the worst-affected states. With over 1.5 lakh tests conducted in the last 24 hours, the state’s TPR is 1.3 per cent.
