New Covid cases nearly quadrupled in March, test positivity increases to 7.1%

New Delhi: The total number of new cases of Covid-19 detected from India in the last one week is nearly four times higher than the cases reported in the beginning of March.

A week-over-week comparison shows that between 23 February- 2 March, a total of 1,08,093 new cases were detected. However, between 23-29 March, the number of new cases reported were 4,09,059 — a 3.78 times increase.

As many as 56,211 people tested positive for Covid-19 in the last 24 hours across the country. Maharashtra had the highest number of new cases — 31,643, followed by Punjab with 2,868 new cases and Karnataka with 2,792.

Only 5,82,919 doses of vaccines were given in the last 24 hours. So far, 6,11,13,354 vaccine doses have been administered in India.

As many as 89,01,956 people have received both doses of the vaccine in India so far.

Active cases in India increased to 5,40,720 Tuesday. This is the first time since November that active cases in the country have crossed the five lakh-mark.

India’s Covid-19 death toll increased to 1,62,114 Monday, with 271 Covid-19 deaths reported across the country in the last 24 hours.

The overall fatality rate for India has now dropped to 1.34. Punjab’s case fatality reduced to 2.87 — which is still the highest in the country. Maharashtra’s CFR reduced to 1.97 while that of Sikkim is 2.16.

The rapid drop in CFR can be attributed to the increase in the percentage of active cases across the country.

Test Positivity Rate

With the increase in daily positive cases and a drop in the number of tests conducted yesterday, the test positivity for India increased to 7.1 per cent in the last 24 hours.

Meanwhile, the overall test positivity, calculated since the beginning of the pandemic is 4.9 per cent.

In the last 24 hours, 7,85,864 Covid-19 tests were conducted across 1,227 government laboratories and 1,206 private laboratories. Over 24.2 crore tests have been carried out in the country since the beginning of the pandemic.

Recovered cases

As many as 37,028 patients have been discharged from Covid-19 hospitals across India in the last 24 hours. This brings the total number of recoveries since the beginning of the pandemic to 1,13,93,021.

As many as 1,20,95,855 people in India have been infected with Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic. The largest number of cases so far have been reported from Maharashtra, followed by Kerala and Karnataka.

States with highest active cases

Maharashtra reported 31,643 new Covid cases since yesterday, taking the total number of active cases in the state to 3,37,928.

A total of 27,45,518 people from the state have been infected with Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic.

Of these, 54,283 people have died, with 102 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

In Kerala, active Covid-19 cases reduced to 24,533 . Since yesterday, the state reported 1,549 new cases of Covid-19.

This takes the total number of cases detected from the state since the beginning of the pandemic to 11,19,542. With 11 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the state’s Covid-19 death toll increased to 4,590.

In Punjab, active Covid-19 cases increased to 24,143, with 2,868 new cases reported in the last 24 hours.

A total of 2,34,602 people in the state have reported to be Covid-19 positive since the beginning of the pandemic. With 59 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the state’s Covid death toll increased to 6,749.

Karnataka reported 2,792 new cases of Covid in the last 24 hours, pushing active cases in the state up to 23,868. A total of 9,89,804 cases have been reported from the state since the beginning of the pandemic.

With 16 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the death toll increased to 12,520.

Chhattisgarh reported 1,423 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours. The state currently has 20,181 active cases. This brings the total number of cases detected from the state to 3,41,516.

The state reported 20 deaths in the last 24 hours, which takes the Covid-19 death toll to 4,096.
