Nearly 50% of new Covid cases reported from Kerala, over 20 lakh vaccinated in India

New Delhi: India’s active case count continues to decline across the country, but Kerala and Maharashtra are once again showing a rising trend. This is of concern as both states currently have more than two-thirds of the active Covid-19 cases in the country.

Meanwhile, over 20 lakh Indians have now been vaccinated against Covid-19.

Just a day after daily new cases of Covid-19 in India fell under 10,000 for the first time in seven months, 12,689 new cases of Covid-19 infections were reported from across the country in the last 24 hours.

Nearly 50 per cent of these new cases were reported from Kerala alone.

Meanwhile, active cases in India declined to 1,76,498. Kerala and Maharashtra together account for over two-thirds of the total active cases in the country.

In the last 24 hours, 137 Covid-19 patients lost their lives across the country, with Maharashtra reporting the highest number of deaths. This brings India’s total coronavirus death toll, since the beginning of the pandemic, to 1,53,724.

India’s overall case fatality rate (CFR) is now 1.44. Punjab’s case fatality rate continues to be the highest in the country at 3.23. Meanwhile, Maharashtra’s CFR reduced to 2.52. Sikkim’s fatality rate has reduced to 2.18.

In the last 24 hours, the number of Covid-19 tests carried out reduced to 5,50,426 across 1,212 government laboratories and 1,147 private laboratories in India.

A total of 19,36,13,120 Covid-19 tests have been carried out in the country since the beginning of the pandemic.

With an increase in new cases and a drop in the number of tests conducted over the last 24 hours, the daily test positivity rate for India nearly doubled to 2.3 per cent. The overall positivity, calculated since the beginning of the pandemic, is now 5.5 per cent.

A total of 20,29,424 Indians have been vaccinated since 16 January, when the vaccination drive began. In the last 24 hours, 5,615 beneficiaries were vaccinated in five states —Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and Telangana.

In the last 24 hours, 13,320 Covid-19 patients were discharged from across India, bringing the total number of recoveries since the beginning of the pandemic to 1,03,59,305.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, 1,06,89,527 people in India have been infected with Covid-19. The highest number of cases have been reported from Maharashtra, followed by Karnataka and Kerala.

Kerala, the state with the highest number of active Covid-19 cases, once again saw a rise in its case count to 71,843. The state reported a nearly two-fold increase in the number of new infections in the last 24 hours with 6,293 cases.

This brings the total number of Covid-19 cases in the state to 8,99,932. Of these, 3,643 Covid-19 patients have died in the state, with 19 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra reported 2,405 new cases of Covid-19 in the last 24 hours. This led to active cases increasing to 45,041. The total number of cases detected from the state is now 20,13,353 — the highest in the country.

As many as 50,862 people in the state have succumbed to the infection since the beginning of the pandemic, with 47 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

In Karnataka, 529 new cases of Covid-19 were detected over the last 24 hours, but active cases in the state declined to 6,652.

As many as 9,36,955 infections have been reported from the state since the beginning of the pandemic, of which 12,204 people have died. Four Covid-19 deaths were reported from the state in the last 24 hours.

In Uttar Pradesh, active cases declined to 6,537, with 301 new cases of Covid-19 reported in the last 24 hours.

As many as 5,99,208 people in the state have been infected with Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic.

With eight deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the state’s death toll has increased to 8,632.

West Bengal reported 295 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of infections detected in the state to 5,68,650.

Of these, 6,028 cases are currently active, while 10,131 people have died since the beginning of the pandemic. Nine Covid-19 deaths were reported in the state in the last 24 hours.
